Thames Estuary airport “utterly absurd”, says RSPB

RSPB says birds use the estuary as a major migratory route, posing a considerable threat to planes of bird strike.

London Mayor Boris Johnson has been heavily criticised for his support of plans for a new airport in the Thames Estuary, dubbed ‘Boris Island’.

According to reports, a consultation on the idea for a new airport will be launched in March, but environmental campaigners have already slammed the plans, with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) labelling the idea as “utterly absurd” because of the hundreds of thousands of birds that use the estuary as a major migratory route.

Chris Corrigan, the RSPB’s director for South East England, said no amount of “wishful thinking” on the Major’s behalf changes the fact that the Thames Estuary is “not dead space, waiting for development”.

He said: “It is home to an immense number of birds and other wildlife. You can not recreate the estuary nor move on the native or migratory wildlife that relies on it for food and shelter.”

“I'm sure the Mayor doesn't want to go down in history as the man who decimated not just birds in the Thames, but global species too, while putting air passengers lives at risk due to bird strike.

“I'd urge him to drop this costly pursuit now and look to further strengthening, greening and improving London's public transport systems.”

Meanwhile, Friends of the Earth's executive director Andy Atkins has also voiced his concerns: “A new airport in the Thames estuary would have a devastating impact on local communities and the environment – and all for pie-in-the sky economics that simply don't add up.

“London doesn't need another hub airport – the capital already has more flights to the world’s main business destinations than our European neighbours.

“David Cameron's pledge to lead the greenest government ever will ring hollow if he gives the green light to a huge expansion in air travel."

Alongside the RSPB and a broad coalition of millions, we are wholly opposed to the construction of an airport anywhere in the Thames Estuary because of the immense damage it would cause to the area’s internationally important wildlife and the wider environment. The whole issue was exhaustively investigated between 2002 and 2005 in the Governmen''s Aviation White Paper. ALL the key players, including the aviation industry, contributed. The idea of an airport in the Thames Estuary was conclusively ruled out and upheld by the High Court. In addition to the unprecedented environmental damage and the resulting massive legal implications, the investigation found that an estuary airport did not make sense economically, would not meet the requirements of the aviation industry and presented a significantly higher risk of'‘BIRD STRIKE' than at any other major airport in the UK. It would potentially be the single biggest piece of environmental vandalism ever perpetrated in the UK.
How can David Cameron, who ruled out a third runway for Heathrow on "Environmental" grounds, now contemplate an airport in the Tames Estuary? And Nodding Nick Clegg whose party is against this scheme, have "an open mind" on the scheme. Such an airport, with all its associated infrastructure: new motorways, rail links, residential and commercial construction, will utterly destroy this area of North Kent which, at present, is a haven for migratory and resident birds. So much for "the greenest government ever"! Cameron shouldn't even listen to the scruffy blond megalomaniac who is simply after his job - and nor should anyone else! Mike Lane
