If the Government is serious about making a success of the future UK economy it must take steps to protect investment in our critical infrastructure, says the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) ahead of Wednesday’s Pre Budget Report.

There are now 1.4 million freelancers contributing to the UK economy today and that figure is all set to grow if the last ten years are anything to go by; since 1998, there has been a 14% growth in freelancing.  And, whilst the credit crunch is certainly having an effect on the British economy, it would seem that many are not being put off and are taking the chance to set up on their own.

Delivering sustainability has become the overarching objective that we should all strive to achieve but what does it really mean and, more pertinently, what can manufacturers do to improve the sustainability of their operations and products?

In the three decades since the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was established, Britain's record on workplace safety has been steadily improving. Whereas in the late 1970s more than 600 people a year died in accidents at work, last year that figure was down to 229.
