In the face of strained relations with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, a north west firm has secured a prestigious contract in the country.

Salford-based Conductix-Wampfler UK, a mobile energy specialist, is to install its energy and data transmissions systems in the Buenos Aires Metro.

It will be the first deal the firm - which employs 31 staff in Salford - has won in South America, but it believes that more are set to follow.

"This is a particularly important contract win for Conductix-Wampfler UK because it will see us working in South America for the very first time, said managing director Alan Jones. "It demonstrates our commitment to exploring new international markets.

"There continues to be great demand for our products and services and we are now keen to ramp up our profile in South America.

"Negotiations are under way with other major metro networks in this geographical area and we hope to announce more deals later this year.

"We will be delivering products for the Buenos Aires Metro line which will provide an electrical supply to trains in the underground maintenance depot.

"This specialist equipment will be manufactured at our Salford site before being exported and installed by our team of technicians."

Jones said the firm, which currently generates 28% of its revenues overseas, will continue to target the rail sector to drive export sales and future growth.

Even before the new order, the company had experienced a surge in business of  almost 50% during the first quarter of 2012, taking orders totalling £1.6m between January and March, up from £1.1m in the same period last year.

In 2011, the company saw turnover rise by 20% to more than £5m, and this year it expects to break £6m.

Previously, Conductix-Wampfler won contracts in the international rail market in Montreal and for metro systems in Bangalore, Algiers and Shenzhen, China.

Conductix-Wampfler, which is part of the global Conductix-Wampfler Group, also provides power and data transmission systems for the mining, ports and utility sectors.
